Recomended hardware
Every Local Game Store operates a little differently. Store layouts, event sizes, inventory volume, and workflows can vary significantly from one location to another. Because of that, Kinetic is designed to work with a wide range of hardware solutions rather than locking stores into a single vendor ecosystem.
The hardware listed on this page is not required to use Kinetic. Instead, these are products and configurations that have performed well through real-world testing, day-to-day store operations, and years of practical experience in hobby retail environments.
Internet & security
Reliable internet and network infrastructure are critical for modern Local Game Stores. Between point-of-sale systems, payment terminals, customer Wi-Fi, inventory devices, streaming, events, and dozens, sometimes hundreds, of connected devices, many standard home routers simply are not designed to handle the demands of a busy retail environment.
One of the hardware ecosystems we commonly recommend is the Ubiquiti UniFi Platform, particularly the Dream Machine line, UniFi wireless access points, and UniFi security camera systems.
UPC SCANNER
For barcode and UPC scanning, one of the scanners we commonly recommend is the Adesso NuScan 2900 Wireless Barcode Scanner.
Through day-to-day use in Local Game Store environments, we have found the NuScan 2900 to be a reliable option for both front-counter operations and inventory workflows. It performs well in fast-paced retail environments where employees may be scanning products continuously throughout the day.
The scanner supports a wide range of barcode formats including:
UPC barcodes
ISBN barcodes
QR codes
1D and 2D barcode formats
This flexibility is especially useful in hobby retail where stores often work with sealed product, books, accessories, event materials, and inventory labels across multiple product categories.
Cash Drawer
For cash drawer setups, one of the options we commonly recommend is the Volcora Under-Counter Cash Register Drawer.
Under-counter cash drawers are especially useful in Local Game Store environments where counter space is often limited, and registers need to remain clean, organized, and efficient during busy events or high customer traffic.
The Volcora drawers have performed well in retail environments that require:
Frequent daily transactions
Long operating hours
Fast employee access
Reliable opening mechanisms
Durable construction for heavy use
PC / Computer
Kinetic is designed to run efficiently and does not require extremely high-end hardware. In most cases, modern systems with stable internet connectivity and solid everyday performance will work well for Local Game Store operations.
That said, game stores rarely use their register systems for only point-of-sale tasks. Throughout the day, employees are often running multiple applications and browser tabs at the same time — including tools like TCGplayer, BoardGameGeek, vendor portals, Discord, inventory systems, spreadsheets, web browsers, and product lookups while also processing sales and inventory changes.
Because of that, we generally recommend systems with:
An Intel i5 equivalent processor or better
At least 16GB of RAM
A solid-state drive (SSD)
Reliable wired or strong wireless internet connectivity
These specifications help provide a smoother experience when multitasking throughout the day and help prevent slowdowns during busy store operations.
